Day 4 – Exploring Auckland

Today we spent the day exploring the city of Auckland.  We began by walking back down the Prince’s Wharf area for breakfast.

Walking along the waterfront a little further.  These buildings along the wharf, which look like cruise ships, house restaurants and retail shops on the ground floor, a lot of office space, and the Hilton hotel at the far end.

We then purchased tickets to the Explorer bus, which is a tourist bus that circles around the city, allowing you to hop on and off at various popular places throughout the day.

Day 3 – Arrival in Auckland

Shortly after 9 AM local time, we arrived in Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand.  With over 1 million people, Auckland has nearly one third of the population of the country.

After claiming our bags and clearing customs, we took a shuttle to our hotel in downtown Auckland.

The photo below was taken on the way to the hotel, and is for Tsiry, Nadine’s brother-in-law.

Although we arrived at the hotel a full five hours prior to check-in time, our room was ready for us.  We were given a lovely room on the 18th floor with a view of Auckland harbour.  Below are a few photos from the room.

After getting settled in the room, it was time to go out exploring in search of some lunch.  Below are some photos of our walk around the Auckland harbour area, which is just packed with choices of cafes along the waterfront.

By this point, the jetlag was catching up with Nadine, so we went back to the hotel for a rest.

Day 2 – Los Angeles to Auckland

As I write this, we’re about two hours from our arrival in Auckland.

The long haul flight from Los Angeles to Auckland was comfortable.  The service with Air New Zealand is excellent, the meals were wonderful and the seats spacious.  There is simply no comparison to Air Canada.  I highly recommend Air NZ to anyone who may have them as an option for an upcoming trip.

We were able to relax in the lounge (pictured below) and have a refreshing shower and a meal before the cabin crew greeted us and personally escorted us to our departure gate.

Here we are getting ready for take-off.  The seats were very comfortable and allowed us to stretch out and get a good night’s sleep on the plane.

From the champagne and orange juice upon boarding, to the six course dinner and five course breakfast served, we certainly did not arrive hungry.  The wide selection of complimentary New Zealand wines on board was a fantastic way to sample some of the local wines.

We made a brief stop in Rarotonga (Cook Islands) along the way, where we had to step off the plane for about 60 minutes while they refuelled.  The sun was up when we resumed the flight, and it’s obviously a very beautiful place.  However, I didn’t want to risk any more pictures.  It was so hot and humid that my camera lens was fogging on the first photo shown below!
