Day 11 – Skiing at Lake Louise (again)

After doing a bit of hiking the past two days, we were determined to return to the ski hill today. Fortunately, the temperatures and ski conditions were excellent. And, perhaps more importantly, so were the crowds!

We arrived rather early to get parked close, and to be on the hills early. Here we are, ready to go, just waiting for the lifts to open.

Once the lifts opened, we headed up to carve up the freshly groomed trails.

Here’s a video of Nadine skiing down her first run of the day.

We spent the day skiing mostly the front side of the mountain, and a little bit on the back side. Unfortunately, we were unable to ski Larch, as it was closed the entire week we were here, as the lift was down and waiting for parts.

Instead of returning to the Whitehorn Bistro for lunch, we decided to get food at the main lodge and eat it on the porch overlooking the base of the hill. We finished eating, and headed back up for a few more runs.

The sun was nice and bright for most of the day. Below is a nice shot of the main lodge as we’re coming back down on our last run.

After returning to the van, we once again headed over to Lake Louise, since the weather was a bit sunnier than earlier in the week. It’s getting late in the day, and the lake was mostly in shadow, but it was still a beautiful sight.

We walked around the main skating area and ice castle for a bit. When we return next winter, we plan to stay in Lake Louise instead of in Banff, so perhaps we’ll get a chance to go out skating, which I haven’t done in probably 30 years!

Here I am, standing on the snow bank, gazing up at Mount Whyte.

Before returning to the car, we watched a bit of a very typical Canadian sport played all across the country… pond hockey (but with more impressive background scenery).

And here’s one final image of Lake Louise on our way back to the car.

It was a tiring but very good day! We returned to Banff, had a nice dinner in the Gold lounge, and relaxed at the hotel for the evening.

Day 8 – Skiing at Lake Louise

After an early breakfast in the lounge, we got suited up for a day of skiing.  Our plan for our ski days in the Rockies, was to ski at Lake Louise Ski Resort.  This meant a 45-minute run up the highway from Banff to Lake Louise to start our day.  Next year, it will be my turn to choose where we stay during our ski trip, and we’ll stay the entire time at the Chateau Lake Louise!

No less than 30 seconds away from our hotel, we were met with a short road block.  A big buck elk was just standing in the middle of the main road.  After a short while, he wandered off through some trees and into a residential area.  We didn’t have our cameras out, but managed to film this short video as he was moving away.

Continuing on our way, we made it to the Lake Louise Ski Area and headed out to the lifts.

It was a mostly overcast day, with light snow, so I don’t have a lot of great pictures to share from the day. However, the ski conditions were excellent!

When it came to lunch time, we decided to eat at Whitehorn Bistro, a new restaurant which sits mid-mountain on the upper floor of the Whitehorn Lodge. It was nice having a full service dining restaurant, even accepting reservations, on the ski hill. That’s a pleasant change from the hectic cafeterias found at most ski areas.

After lunch, we continued our day of skiing.

Once finished skiing for the day, we thought we’d take a quick drive over to Lake Louise and see her in winter.

Below is the famous ice castle, which is built on the lake every year. There were also several ice carvings around the shoreline, which were created as part of the ice carving contest held a few weeks earlier.

They even had an ice bar!

We took several photos, but due to the heavy cloud cover, they didn’t turn out too great. We’ll come back here later in the week, when we will hopefully have some sun.

Back in Banff, we had reservations at our favourite restaurant in the Rockies, Castello, which is one of the restaurants in the Banff Springs Hotel.  We enjoyed a nice dinner and went to bed after a long and very full day.

Day 9 – Heading Home

Today is the day we need to leave for home, and it’s really sad, because the fantastic weather we had yesterday is sticking around today!

In order to comfortably make our flight home, we would need to leave Lake Louise around 11:30 AM.  After breakfast, we packed our things and headed outside for one more short walk.  Since we hadn’t walked the Lake Louise shoreline yet on this visit, we thought that was a nice thing to do before heading for the airport.

Passing by the front of the Chateau, they were setting up for a wedding.  Some lucky couple has obviously won the weather lottery for their big day!

After our short walk by the lake, it was time to check out of our lovely hotel and start the 2-hour drive back to Calgary International Airport.  Once back in Calgary, we dropped off the rental car, went through all the usual airport formalities, and waited for our flight back to Toronto.

We make it back home safely, and look forward to returning to this beautiful area again sometime.
