Day 3 – Geneva to Montreux

Our first full day in Switzerland started out with similar weather to the day we arrived;  Sunny skies and warm temperatures.  Here is a morning picture out our window.

Our plan today was to move on to Montreux; a small city at the other end of the lake. There are fairly regular trains, so we can pretty much leave at our leisure. We decided to spend the morning doing some more exploring of Geneva on foot.  After a nice breakfast on the hotel patio, we headed toward the river.

We noticed there are a lot of motorcycles in this city.  As it appears that ‘business casual’ attire hasn’t made its way to Geneva, it was not uncommon to see people dressed in business suits riding on motorcycles!

Here are some photos around the river where it flows from Lake Geneva.

We even saw someone swimming with the swans.

Heading back across the river and up toward the old town.

We stopped in for a quick look at Saint Peter’s Cathedral.

Back down at the hotel, here is the view from the rooftop terrace.

While I’m sure there is more to see in Geneva, we didn’t come to Switzerland to spend a lot of time in the cities, so it’s time to check out and head for the train station. After picking up some food and drink in the grocery store at the station, we boarded our train for Montreux.

Here is a photo of our train car. It’s very quiet and comfortable.

The scenery along the way was very pretty, however, photography from a moving train through reflecting window glass is not easy, so I won’t post many photos of the journey! However, these tiered vineyards on the hillside above the lake in the Veyvey area were very interesting. We’ll likely make a day trip back here to explore these further. Sorry for the poor photo quality.

Arriving in Montreux, it was only a 400 meter walk to our hotel, so with luggage in tow, we headed toward the hotel.

We have a very nice suite, complete with two sets of doors onto a private balcony overlooking Lake Geneva, in the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace.

Here is Nadine sitting in our living room.

Below is a picture of the bedroom.

Finally, this is the view from our balcony. The green lawn across the street is actually the roof of another part of the hotel. The Willow Stream Spa and health club is actually across the street from the main building, but connected from inside by taking the elevator to floor “-1” and walking across.

Since the weather was still excellent, we set out to walk up the shoreline for a couple of kilometers.

Statue of Freddie Mercury…

Here is Nadine testing the water temperature. It’s very warm!

In addition to trains and buses, these boats form part of the public transit system.

Just a bit further up the walk, you can see the famous Chateau de Chillon in the centre of this photo. We plan to tour this castle during our stay here.

Taking a rest along the walk…

Back at the hotel, we went across to the spa for a quick evening swim in the outdoor pool before returning to our room for the night.

Day 2 – Arrival in Geneva

Shortly before arriving in Munich, we awoke from a very comfortable flight.  We freshened up a bit and got changed, before getting ready to land.

The weather looked nice, if a bit hazy, as we were approaching Munich airport.

Instead of parking at a remote stand, which is common at European airports, our flight arrived at a gate. Unfortunately, it was the furthest gate in the terminal, so it meant a bit of a walk. After about 15 minutes, we made our way to the Lufthansa First Class lounge, where they have their own immigration desk to clear incoming passengers.

After formalities, the first order of business was to get a nice shower and some breakfast.  They have very nice facilities for both showers and baths, which are most welcome after a long flight.  And to complete the experience, we were provided with nice souvenir rubber ducks for the bath!

After a nice hot breakfast, we relaxed before it was time to board our flight to Geneva. They had a nice buffet breakfast and also a nice menu of made-to-order items.

Our flight to Geneva was on a smaller aircraft, and was leaving from a remote location on the tarmac rather than from a terminal gate. However, instead of having to take a shuttle bus, the FCT has a limousine service downstairs where they drive us directly from the lounge to the aircraft stairs!  This was our ride.

Once in the air, we were less than an hour from landing in Switzerland. Here we are flying over Lac Léman.

Once on the ground, we claimed our luggage and grabbed the train into town toward our hotel, the Swissôtel Métropole, Geneva.

We were only going to be in Geneva for one night, and we expect most of our time will be a little difficult as we recover from jet lag, however, we did want to see what we could while we were here.

We had a nice updated room with a view to the park in front of the lake.

After getting settled, we set out to explore the waterfront area, and decided to take a boat tour of Geneva.

The boat tour lasted about an hour. We then explored some of the nearby streets and looked for a bite to eat for dinner. Geneva is a very pretty city.

After dinner, we returned to the hotel and tried to get some sleep and get accustomed to the time change as quickly as possible.

Day 1 – Leaving Toronto

Like most of our vacations, our journey to Switzerland began at Pearson Airport in Toronto. We like to take non-stop flights wherever possible, however, there are no non-stop flight options between Toronto and Geneva. While this means that we will unfortunately have the added time of a connecting flight, it does open up more options in the choice of airlines. So instead of flying our usual choice of Air Canada Business Class, we decided to splurge a bit and fly First Class with Lufthansa, connecting in Munich.

The trip began with the usual stop for a late lunch in the Maple Leaf Lounge.

When it was time to board, a Lufthansa representative came to the lounge to take us to the aircraft. The gate area was very busy and chaotic, but we skipped the familiar zones 1 through 6 boarding lines, and they opened up a special lane and escorted us down the jet bridge and onto the aircraft.

The First Class cabin was cozy, with only 8 seats. The seats were spacious, with lots of storage space and offered nice views with 4 windows in each suite. Here we are getting settled in for the flight.

20150829_171430We were given our amenity kits, slippers and pyjamas for the flight, and were offered pre-flight drinks and snacks. Shortly after take-off, the caviar cart made the rounds before they started appetizers. Here’s a photo of one of the menu pages.

Here are the appetizers.

And finally the dessert cart!

After dinner, we finished up our movies and then got ready for bed. After returning from the washroom to change and freshen up, the flight attendants had our beds made up.

We let the flight attendants know that we would be skipping breakfast, in order to get as much sleep as possible. Since we had a 3 hour connection in Munich, there would be lots of time to get a shower and a nice breakfast in the lounge upon arrival. While the bed was comfortable enough, with plenty of leg and elbow room (unlike the Business Class pods on Air Canada which tend to be a little narrow at the feet), it was difficult to get a really great sleep, given the time of day. Our flight left Toronto around 5:45 and arrived in Munich about 8 hours later, which meant we were trying to get to sleep from about 8PM eastern time, which is a little too early.
