{"id":2641,"date":"2016-02-13T12:00:51","date_gmt":"2016-02-13T16:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hodson.ca\/Travel\/?p=2641"},"modified":"2016-06-05T11:56:13","modified_gmt":"2016-06-05T15:56:13","slug":"day-9-johnston-canyon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hodson.ca\/Travel\/?p=2641","title":{"rendered":"Day 9 \u2013 Johnston Canyon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we were last in the Canadian Rockies in late summer 2014, we did a hike up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hodson.ca\/Travel\/?p=1677\">Johnston Canyon<\/a>.\u00a0 For a different perspective, we decided to check out the same area in the winter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2643\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hodson.ca\/Travel\/wp-content\/pictures\/WhistlerBanff2016\/20160213_120649-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"20160213_120649\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Between the snow and freezing spray, we were told to expect the area to be slippery, and considering much of the hike is not flat, we purchased traction devices to attach to our boots, and also carried our ski poles with us. Both of those items would prove to be wise choices!<\/p>\n<p>As we headed into the canyon, much of the ice had a beautiful blue colour to it, where waterfalls appeared frozen in time behind a thin blanket of snow.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2644\" canyon toward the lower falls.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2645\" toward the upper falls.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hodson.ca\/Travel\/wp-content\/pictures\/WhistlerBanff2016\/20160213_125549-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"20160213_130516\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2650\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Arriving at the upper falls, there were a few groups of ice climbers ascending the cliffs behind the canyon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hodson.ca\/Travel\/wp-content\/pictures\/WhistlerBanff2016\/20160213_133034-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"20160213_133034\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2651\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We explored the area around the upper falls for a while, able to get a very different perspective of this magnificent area in the winter than on our summer visit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" in accessing the upper falls.
